Dr Julie Beak
MBBS, FRACP
Julie is Paedicare’s director. She provides newborn services as a paediatrician at Mater Mothers’ Private Brisbane, and specialist private paediatric services from Paedicare’s rooms in the Salmon Building on Mater’s South Brisbane campus.
Julie was born in Brisbane. She enjoys providing holistic care for babies, children, and their families. She finds it a privilege to support families in understanding and managing the many normal conditions and diverse range of medical conditions that babies and children can experience.
Julie has an interest in neonatology (the care of newborn babies including those born prematurely), infant development and the management of children with complex needs.
Julie undertook a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at the University of Queensland and graduated in 1993. She received her Fellowship in General Paediatrics with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2005. As part of this, she has gained experience in multiple paediatric sub-specialties at the former Mater Children’s Hospital. She was employed in senior registrar positions in neonatology at the Royal Women’s Hospital in Brisbane and as the infectious diseases Fellow at the former Royal Children’s Hospital. She completed a Fellowship in child protection at the former Mater Children’s Hospital.
Over the past five years Julie has enjoyed working in private practice at Cleveland providing neonatal cover to Mater Private Hospital Redland and also general paediatric care to babies and children. She worked as a consultant paediatrician at the former Mater Children’s Hospital for 10 years and since its closure has transitioned to the Queensland Children’s Hospital.
Julie is a mother of four and can relate to the many challenges of parenthood. When not working she enjoys spending time with her family, camping, and cycling.
Dr Fifi Djatmiko
MBBS, FRACP, Clin Dip Pall Med
Fifi provides newborn services as a paediatrician at Mater Mothers’ Private Brisbane, and specialist private paediatric services from Paedicare’s rooms in the Salmon Building on Mater’s South Brisbane campus.
Fifi was awarded her medical degree in 2006 from the University of Melbourne and received her Fellowship in General Paediatrics with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2017.
She completed her basic paediatric medical training at the former Mater Children’s Hospital and her neonatology training component at the Mater Mothers’ Hospital. Fifi has worked in various peripheral and rural Paediatric and Neonatal Units in Queensland. She has also worked at the Alberta Children’s Hospital, in Calgary, Canada.
Fifi enjoys teaching. As an Advanced Trainee, at the Queensland Children’s Hospital, she was responsible for teaching medical students as well as junior medical staff while rotating as a General Paediatric Medical Education Fellow.
Fifi’s special interest lies in the area of caring for children with complex and chronic medical conditions. Collaborating with family, carers and other medical subspecialties, her aim is to alleviate a child’s physical, psychological, spiritual and social distress. She recently undertook a Post-Fellowship Diploma in Paediatric Palliative Care. This has further broadened her knowledge and expertise with providing holistic medical care to children of all ages.
Proficient in English and Bahasa Indonesia, Fifi has conducted frequent voluntary work as a medical interpreter to both Australian and Indonesian based non government organisations. Fifi believes that effective communication characterised by understanding, trust, respect, empathy and confidentiality play a crucial part in the delivery of quality medical care.
When not at work, Fifi enjoys travelling, and cooking up a feast in her kitchen. Considering that her latest research was in the area of childhood obesity and weight management program, she tries her best to eat in moderation and keep fit.
Dr Dallas Fowler
MBBS BSc (Hons) FRACP (General paediatrics and paediatric endocrinology)
Dallas is a specialist General Paediatrician and a Paediatric Endocrinologist. She provides specialist private general paediatric and paediatric endocrinology services from Paedicare’s rooms in the Salmon Building on Mater’s South Brisbane campus.
Dallas began working as General Paediatrician with Paedicare in 2017. She obtained her medical degree from the University of Queensland and completed the majority of her General Paediatric training at the Mater Children’s Hospital Brisbane. She has a broad range of experience across all areas of general paediatrics, including developmental and behavioural issues, and enjoys managing children from birth into their teenage years.
From 2018, while continuing to work as a General Paediatrician, Dallas completed additional training in paediatric endocrinology through a clinical fellowship at the Queensland Children’s Hospital and qualified as Paediatric Endocrinologist in December 2020.
Dallas now offers paediatric endocrine services in addition to general paediatric services at Paedicare, including specialist management of thyroid disorders, adrenal disorders, disorders of growth and puberty and pituitary disorders. Dallas does not accept referrals for management of Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus at Paedicare.
Dr John Gunn
MBBS, FRACP
John provides newborn services as a paediatrician at Mater Mothers’ Private Brisbane, and specialist private paediatric services from Paedicare’s rooms in the Salmon Building on Mater’s South Brisbane campus, and from Family Doctors Plus, 2/178 Albion Road, Windsor Qld 4030.
John was born and raised in Brisbane. He attended school and university here and graduated from the University of Queensland medical school in 2005. John has spent subsequent years working in paediatrics at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Brisbane and also in several of the units in peripheral towns around Queensland. He also spent a year at the Alice Springs Hospital in the Northern Territory looking after indigenous children. He has experience in ICU and acute medicine for babies and also older children.
John enjoys all aspects of child health (age 0-18 years) with a special interest in newborn medicine. He believes that the cornerstone of his job is to have the whole family and health team on the same page. Communication is key and a new diagnosis or treatment is difficult if the family does not fully understand the problem at hand.
When not at work, John enjoys spending time with his family. He also enjoys camping and playing amateur golf. He looks forward to meeting you.
Dr Emily Horsley
B Med Sci MBBS DCH MPHTM FRACP
Emily provides newborn services at Mater Mothers’ Private Brisbane and specialist private paediatric services from the Salmon Building on the Mater South Brisbane campus.
Emily works as a specialist paediatrician at Mater Health and Queensland Children’s Hospital. Dr Horsley completed medical training at the University of Queensland (2005) before specialist training in paediatrics through the Sydney Children’s Hospital (2012). She has an extensive educational background including a Master of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. She has continued her education through research, centred around paediatric disease as well as Patient Safety and Quality Improvement.
Emily has had broad training and experience in the management of a wide range of neonatal and paediatric acute, developmental and chronic illnesses. She enjoys working in a multi-disciplinary partnership with families, general practitioners, allied health professionals and educators to help children reach their full potential.
Dr Yassmin Musthaffa
BHB (Auckland), MBChB (Auckland), PhD, FRACP (Paediatric endocrinology), FRACP (General Paediatrics), DCH
Yassmin provides specialist private General Paediatric and Paediatric Endocrinology services from Mater’s South Brisbane campus.
Yassmin spent her early childhood in Zambia and later childhood in New Zealand. She has spent many years working in leading hospitals across New Zealand and Queensland as both a general paediatrician as well as a paediatric endocrinologist. Yassmin trained in two different paediatric specialties because she felt strongly that this would enable her to provide well-rounded, family-centred, holistic care. Children with endocrine concerns frequently have overlay into general paediatric domains as well. Being trained in both areas enables Yassmin to provide comprehensive care without your child having to see multiple specialists.
Yassmin has a particular interest in Type 1 Diabetes and completed a PhD in 2024 investigating the development of a biomarker for immunotherapy. This research has received several national and international accolades, including the prestigious ‘Young Investigator Award’ presented by the Australian and New Zealand Paediatric Society for Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes. She developed a Type 1 Diabetes paediatric service at Logan hospital to provide tertiary level care closer to home and currently leads a team of passionate clinicians who are achieving exceptional outcomes for the children they care for.
Yassmin provides follow up outpatient care for newborns to adolescents. Of particular interest to her are thyroid disorders, adrenal disorders, disorders of puberty and pituitary disorders. Yassmin’s training pathway has enriched her clinical skills and enables her to provide exceptional, culturally competent care for her patients. She is a mother of three very different children (one book worm, one social butterfly and a feisty 9-month-old), a dog named Marley and three chickens named Peri-peri, Butter and Teriyaki. She coaches her daughter’s netball team and loves gardening.
Dr Priyam Jha
MBBS FRACP
Priyam is a passionate and experienced Paediatrician dedicated to providing the best care to Brisbane’s babies. She provides newborn services at the Mater Mother’s Hospital, and specialist private paediatric services in clinic.
Priyam graduated from Bond University in 2011, and completed her paediatric training at the Mater Hospital, Queensland Children’s Hospital and multiple sites around Queensland, including additional training in Child Protection. She received her Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Physicians in 2021. She is currently undertaking further study in Neuroprotective Developmental Care through the Possums program.
Priyam is dedicated to providing comprehensive and compassionate paediatric care, with a special interest in the uniquely challenging newborn period. She takes pride in supporting families with feeding, settling and development. With a deep understanding that every family is different, she strongly believes in tailoring solutions to fit each family’s values and circumstances.
In her spare time, Priyam runs around after her two small children. She enjoys reading and cooking (and eating).
Priyam is also fluent in Hindi.
Dr Ingrid Bucens
MBBS FRACP MPH
Ingrid is a General Paediatrician with lengthy experience in both clinical paediatrics and in public health for mothers, babies and children.
Ingrid graduated from the University of Western Australia in 1987 and was admitted to the College of Physicians in 1997, having trained in paediatrics at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne. She later completed a Masters of Public Health (focussing on International health) at Monash University in Melbourne in 2005.
Ingrid began her practice as a consultant paediatrician at the Royal Darwin Hospital in 1997, where she moved to pursue her interest in Indigenous health. There, her main responsibility was the neonatal unit, though she also worked in general paediatrics, was involved in research and medical education.
In 2001 Ingrid moved further north, to East Timor, where she worked for almost 20 years, pursing her interests in maternal – neonatal health; childhood cancer care and improving the quality of hospital care in general for neonates and children in resource poor settings. She worked at all levels of the health system, from government to UN agencies (Unicef, WHO), NGOs and in the hospital sector. She also worked for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) in postgraduate education in paediatrics and child health. She received the Paul Harris Medal in recognition of her work in East Timor with Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC).
Since returning to Australia in 2020 Ingrid has worked in hospitals in both the NT and Queensland. She joined the team at Paedicare early in 2023; she provides newborn services at Mater Mothers’ Private Brisbane and specialist private paediatric services from the Salmon Building on the Mater South Brisbane campus. She has a particular interest in helping mothers and babies to successfully breastfeed.
Ingrid continues her associations with both Royal Darwin and the National Hospital in East Timor and, through Menzies School of Health Research, is currently undertaking an operational research in neonatal sepsis.
Ingrid speaks Portugese and Tetum (the language of East Timor) as well as English.
